I asked myself “what should I do with my life?” and God answered me through Ecclesiastes
I woke up early in the morning of September 2, 2024 -Monday.
The whole room was dark and all my roommates were sleeping and if my memory serves me right, it was raining cats and dogs then a negative emotion started creeping into my mind and I was like, “hey, where is this coming from? I was just fine when I went to bed last night. Why did I wake up like this?”
Is this melancholy?
And that negative emotion led me to ask this question, “what should I do with my life now?”
Oh no… Do I sound depressed?
Or maybe I’m just lost…
Ugh! That thought in that dark room has become suffocating, so, I pushed myself to get up and went to the kitchen/dining area of our dormitory.
I turned on the light and talked to God through praying and listened to Him through reading the Bible and I was comforted.
The book I’ve read is Ecclesiastes chapter 1-3. It was written by King David’s son. It’s all about his observation that takes place under the sun and his recommendation.
These are the verses that speaks about his observation:
“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!
(Ecclesiastes 1:2 NLT)
“I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless—like chasing the wind.”
(Ecclesiastes 1:14 NLT)
“I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.”
(Ecclesiastes 1:16-17 NLT)
“I said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:1 NLT)
“As I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:11 NLT)
“So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:17 NLT)
“Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn’t worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy. So what do people get in this life for all their hard work and anxiety?”
(Ecclesiastes 2:21-22 NLT)
The common denominator of his observation is:
“everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind.”
And these are the verses that speaks about his recommendations:
“So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God.”
Ecclesiastes 2:24 NLT
“So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.”
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 NLT
“So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.”
Ecclesiastes 3:22 NLT
The common denominator of his recommendation is:
“be happy -be happy in our work, find satisfaction in work and enjoy the fruits of our labor.”
And this is an answer to my question “what should I do with my life?”
